The Road to Timbuktu

Couldn't sleep so rather than tossing and turning under the mosquito net I got up to see if there was any connection- and yes, bingo! And an email from Down Under cheered me up: the programme is called 'the Road to Timbuktu' and it is to be shown on something called 'Foreign Correspondent' on Tuesday at 8pm in Australia. Here I am with Eric Campbell the reporter and David the cameraman.  Will they show a little snippet of the fashion show?
Yes, yes, I know I have been overdoing the Pirogue dress recently, and its in virtually every post... will wear something else next time, promise!

Were you able to work the little film? In 30 seconds you pop up looking GORGEOUS and saying 'to impose your belief on people...that doesn't work here'. We so hope to see the full thing - can you get them to send you a DVD?

You're right - the first half hour episode is now up here, and there's a nice puff for MaliMali before the transcript in the text:

Now to watch...

Sophie: David just alerted a number of us to the ABC segment. You spoke eloquently and sensibly about the situation, and about the ethos and beauty of Djenne, in particular. So many particulars you bring to light for me--the mixing in of various influences/beliefs in religious practice, analogizing Catholicism in Mexico--and it had not occurred to me that the gorgeous patterned cloth of MaliMali was endangered by the war. Thank goodness Djenne escaped, and may all of Mali be safe. I hope it might be possible to come there one day. Such a beautiful place.
